2018 S.D. Growing Season Pretty Much on Target So Far
News Release - June 26, 2018

UNDATED - For the week ending Sunday, there were 4.1 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 1 percent very short, 13 short, 78 adequate, and 8 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 3 percent very short, 20 short, 72 adequate, and 5 surplus.

Corn condition rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 26 fair, 59 good, and 11 excellent.

Soybean condition rated 1 percent very poor, 6 poor, 28 fair, 58 good, and 7 excellent. Soybeans emerged was 98 percent, near 100 last year and 94 for the five-year average. Blooming was 2 percent, near 5 last year and 3 average.

Winter wheat condition rated 1 percent very poor, 11 poor, 40 fair, 46 good, and 2 excellent. Winter wheat headed was 94 percent, behind 100 last year, but ahead of 89 average.

Spring wheat condition rated 3 percent very poor, 7 poor, 33 fair, 53 good, and 4 excellent. Spring wheat headed was 67 percent, behind 82 last year, but ahead of 52 average.

Oats condition rated 1 percent very poor, 2 poor, 29 fair, 60 good, and 8 excellent. Oats headed was 78 percent, behind 85 last year, but ahead of 66 average.

Sorghum condition rated 0 percent very poor, 1 poor, 9 fair, 90 good, and 0 excellent. Sorghum planted was 94 percent, near 98 last year and 92 average.

Sunflowers planted was 87 percent, behind 97 last year, but near 84 average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 8 poor, 39 fair, 48 good, and 5 excellent.
