Update for Sturgis family hurt in fire
Account being set up to aid family hurt in Sturgis house fire
Gary Matthews - May 16, 2018

STURGIS, S.D. – Family members and friends are setting up an account to help three people who suffered severe smoke inhalation in a Sturgis home fire early Saturday.

The family of Jason and Mandy McKee and Mandy's son Ethan, say an account is being set up at First Interstate Bank, and it should be ready by the end of the week.

In the meantime, donations are being accepted at Sturgis Motorsports, which is owned Jason and Mandy's aunt and uncle. Sturgis Motorsports is located at 2695 Lazelle Street.

In the latest entry on Caring Bridge, family members write Tuesday was a difficult day for Jason and Mandy, but health care staff are working hard to keep them comfortable.

Mandy's son Ethan had a progressive day Tuesday, and is no longer on a ventilator. Instead, Ethan uses an oxygen mask to help supplement oxygen into his lungs.

Here is today's Caring Bridge update from Stephanie Weber on Jason and Mandy:

UPDATE - 6AM, 05/16/18

Journal entry by Stephanie Weber — 4 hours ago

Tuesday, 05/15/18, was a very, very difficult day for both Jason and Mandy.  Both are heavily sedated again to minimize agitation so that the hospital staff can work hard on addressing the many issues related to their care.  Earlier in the day, Bill & Cherie were able to visit Ethan at Children's Hospital in Denver before returning to North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley to be on hand to support Jason and Mandy.

We expect to have a donation account established at 1st Interstate Bank by the end of the week.  Fundraising efforts are in the works, as this will be a long-term recovery process.  In the meantime, donations may be delivered to Sturgis Motorsports (2695 Lazelle St, Sturgis, SD 57785), which is owned by Jason and Mandy's aunt and uncle, Joyce and Dick Scheiffer. Please be sure to include your full name and contact information, so that we can send a proper thank you!

Here is today's Caring Bridge update on Ethan from Stephanie Weber:

Journal entry by Stephanie Weber — 4 hours ago

We got a "good day" for Ethan on Tuesday, 05/15/18!  He "passed" his breathing tests, and was able to be "extubated," which means that the breathing tube is out of his throat and he is not currently using a ventilator to assist or support his breathing.  This is great progress!  Ethan does need continued use of a "mask" to supplement oxygen, deliver various medical treatments, etc. - but we'll take it!

Cherie mentioned what a "good year" Ethan has been having health-wise: he hasn't been ill with upper respiratory issues that have cropped up in the past, and his asthma has been under much better control.  We are certain that all the time he has spent playing outside and getting good exercise this school year has really helped his body be in better shape to recover from these injuries. Dad Jason Baker is doing a tremendous job at managing all the details and stress of providing Ethan non-stop support and care at Children's Hospital in Denver.  But remember: still no telephone calls or deliveries (food, toys, flowers, etc.) to Ethan at the hospital, and visitors are limited to family at this time.

We expect to have a donation account established at 1st Interstate Bank by the end of the week.  Fundraising efforts are in the works, as this will be a long-term recovery process.  In the meantime, donations may be delivered to Sturgis Motorsports (2695 Lazelle St, Sturgis, SD 57785), which is owned by Ethan's great-aunt and great-uncle, Joyce and Dick Scheiffer. Please be sure to include your full name and contact information, so that we can send a proper thank you!
