Ag Land Assessment Task Force meets

Ag Land Assessment Task Force meets
Ag Land Assessment Task Force holds first meeting of summer
Jerry Oster - July 12, 2018

PIERRE, S.D. - The Ag Land Assessment Task Force of the South Dakota legislature held their first meeting of the summer this week. The group has been overseeing the progress of the transition of property taxation to a productivity base.

The group got an update on the assessment process, and a soil rating study being done by South Dakota State University.

Landowner Debra Nightingale from Meade County told the task force there is a disconnect between the assessment and actual use of land in their area.

"In Meade County, there is approximately 700,000 acres that are rated crop acres. But, only 230 of that 700,000 is actual FSA numbers. Somewhere along these factors are incorrect."

Task Force Chairman, Representative Larry Rhoden of Union Center, says the rules are not being applied fairly across the state.

"The fact of the matter is, we have a system that's not fair because some assessors apply those adjustments and some do not. And, I have come to the conclusion that we are not going to resolve that unless we do something at the state level and do our jobs to create a system that presents fairness across the board."

The task force will meet several more times before the 2019 legislative session.
