Authorities in Rapid City investigating why two power poles fell over Wednesday

News Staff - May 15, 2019

RAPID CITY S.D. -Authorities in Rapid City are investigating why two power poles fell over on Wednesday.

Rapid City Fire Lt. Jim Bussell says they responded to the Time In Motel and the Time Out Lounge on East North Street.

One pole fell onto the motel, while another fell on a garbage can outside of the lounge around 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Bussell says 280 customers were briefly without power when the poles went down but Black Hills Energy was able to isolate the two buildings without anyone getting hurt, and bring power back to the other customers.

A small oil spill occurred when the transformers hit the ground but it was contained and did not leak into any drainage systems.

Mutch Usera with Black Hills Energy says they will replace the poles in the next few days, in order to cut down on any potential hazards.

Investigation into the cause is underway.
