B1 flyover, parachute jump highlight Military Appreciation Day at Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

Gary Matthews - August 7, 2018

STURGIS, S.D. – Today marked Veteran’s Appreciation Day at the 78th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally – highlighted by a B1 flyover of downtown Sturgis.

The annual B1 flyover is held in conjunction with a regularly scheduled training mission for the B1 fleet in the Powder River Training Complex.

This year marks the 18th annual Veterans Appreciation Day.

The day began with the Green Knights Dakota Thunder Motorcycle Association’s ride from Ellsworth Air Force Base to Sturgis. The ride gives veterans an opportunity to not only enjoy the rally, but see the B1 fleet at Ellsworth close up. The association, with 150 chapters worldwide, invites veterans to participate in the ride.

The Green Knights arrived in Sturgis at 2:00, followed by a parachute jump by veteran Dana Bowman at the Sturgis Community Center.

Bowman helped kickoff the rally Friday by jumping into Main Street.

He had a message for veterans to overcome all adversity, whatever it may be. Bowman, who lost both his legs in an accident when he was a member of the Golden Knights Parachute Team, doesn't let his disability stand in his way.

The city of Sturgis also honored Bob Mechling as their local veteran of the Rally this year.
