BHSU Athletics - November 5, 2017

SPEARFISH, S.D.The Black Hills State University football team outscored Chadron State, 14-0, in the second half, but ultimately fell to the Eagles, 35-14, on Saturday afternoon.

On Senior Day for the Yellow Jacket's 14 seniors, BHSU (4-5, 4-5 RMAC) scored a touchdown in both the third and fourth quarters, while holding the Eagles (6-4, 6-3 RMAC) scoreless in the second half. Phydell Paris passed the century mark in rushing for a sixth game this season.

Chadron State opened the game with a four minute possession that resulted in a touchdown. The Eagles added a two-point conversion, and led, 8-0, with 11 minutes remaining in the first quarter. After two false starts to begin the Yellow Jacket offensive day, they sputtered to a three-and-out. On the first play of CSC's second drive, quarterback Dalton Holst completed a 55-yard pass to Colt Foster for a touchdown, and after a good extra point, the Eagles held a 15-0 lead. The visitors scored on their third drive as well to take a 22-0 lead into the second quarter.

The Eagles scored twice in the second quarter, including a scoop and score on a lost fumble by Ryan Hommel. BHSU entered halftime down, 35-0.

The Yellow Jackets came out aggressive in the second half, and on their first drive of the third quarter, they found their way into the end zone. After driving the ball into Eagle territory on three plays, Hommel threw up a pass that Dylan Reiners hauled in for a 44-yard score, narrowing the score to 35-14. Both teams were unable to score for the rest of the quarter, and the score remained the same entering the final quarter.

On BHSU's first drive in the fourth, the Yellow Jackets drove from their own three-yard line all the way to the six of the Eagles. However, the drive stalled, and Black Hills State turned the ball over on downs. However, the defense immediately forced a three-and-out, giving the ball back to the Yellow Jacket offense with good field position. This time, the home team took advantage, capping a 52-yard drive off with a 3-yard keeper by Hommel. With 4:52 remaining in the game, BHSU trailed the Eagles, 35-14. The defense forced two consecutive three-and-outs, but Black Hills State could not get into the end zone again, and ultimately fell in the rivalry game.

Hommel finished with 247 yards, one passing TD, one rushing TD, and three interceptions. Phydell Paris rushed for 108 yards, his sixth rushing game of over 100 yards this year. Reiners led all receivers with 82 yards and his one touchdown. Defensively, Austin Goddard had a game-high 14 tackles. Isaiah Birkel had 10 tackles, while Jarrell Ganaway had a sack.

Holst threw for 204 yards and two touchdowns, while Derek Jackson ran for 173 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles. Foster and Jackson Dickerson each caught a touchdown through the air. For the Chadron State defense, Ryan Wood had nine tackles, while the unit had four sacks.
