BHSU drops match to Adams State; Mines' women fall to Fort Lewis

ALAMOSA, Colo. - The Black Hills State University volleyball team fell in its match against Adams State University on Saturday evening, 3-2, after forcing a fifth set.

The Yellow Jackets won sets two and four, but fell in sets one, three, and five. The scores went as follows: 25-17, 25-20, 25-23, 25-18, and 15-10.

Black Hills State falls to 4-6 on the season and 1-1 in conference action, while ASU improves to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in conference.

Trailing 1-0 in the match, the Yellow Jackets went on a 4-0 run early in the second set to take the lead, 7-3. The Grizzlies came back to tie it up at 8-all. From there, the two teams traded off points until 14-all, when a kill by Kenzie Kazmer started a 5-0 run for the Yellow Jackets and they took a 15-14 lead over ASU.

The run continued for the Green and Gold after an error by the Grizzlies increased the lead for BHSU to 16-14. Sydney Ederhoff scored a point with a service ace to force Adams State to take a timeout. After the timeout, BHSU scored two more points off a kill by Laurel Lech and an error by ASU to lead, 19-14.

That was enough, as the Yellow Jackets ended the set, 25-20, and tied the match, 1-1.

In the third set, the two teams kept it close until the Grizzlies took a commanding lead at 24-19. With only one point left to close out the set, the Green and Gold put up a fight and scored four straight points to come within one at 24-23. All four of the Yellow Jackets points were scored off errors by ASU. However, that was not enough as the Grizzlies ended the set, 25-23, and took a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set, the two teams traded off points until 5-all when BHSU took the lead and kept it the rest of the set. Its biggest lead came at 19-13 off a kill by Fehrin Ward. From there, the Yellow Jackets momentum continued as they looked to force a set five. Black Hills State closed out set four, 25-18, forcing the fifth set, and tying the match, 2-2.

After forcing a set five, the Green and Gold lost it as ASU jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead and set the pace. The Yellow Jackets did not give up though, as they tied it up at 4-all. However, that was not enough, as the Grizzlies took the lead back at 5-4, and ended the set at 15-10, and the match, 3-2.

Cheyenne Palu led the offense with 18.5 points, tallying 16 kills with a .324 hitting percentage. Sierra Stugelmeyer was right behind Palu with 11 kills. Laurel Lech worked alongside Palu and Stugelmeyer, registering 49 assists.

On the defense, Sydney Ederhoff notched 18 digs. Fehrin Ward and Palu worked together as they each recorded five blocks, while the team had 10 total blocks.

Meanwhile, South Dakota School of Mines volleyball enjoyed a 2-sets-to-1 lead, but couldn't hold off a comeback by Fort Lewis.

Fort Lewis came back to take the match with sets of 25-20 and 15-12.

Mines is now 1-9 on the season.
