Biker killed after crash on Sturgis Road

STURGIS, S.D. - For the second time in as many days, a motorcyclist died after a crash on Sturgis Road.

In it's latest rally tally, the highway patrol says the accident happened Wednesday night, just before 6:30 p.m.

The 39-year-old motorcyclist was traveling westbound on Sturgis Road, when he failed to negotiate a curve about a mile west of Black Hawk. The driver went off the roadway, into the north ditch and down an embankment through a fence. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet.

It is the fourth fatality included in the report for this year's motorcycle rally.

There were also 3 inury crashes Wednesday, including two accidents involving a motorcyclist hitting a deer.

For the year, there have been 35 injury accidents.

Drug arrests remain up over last year. So far, there have been 125 misdemeanor drug arrests and 46 felony drug arrests.

There have been 95 people arrested for D.U.I. That remains down from last year's 112 on this date.

Here is a summary of injury crashes from Wednesday:

At 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, U.S. Highway 14A, mile marker 28, 17 miles south of Spearfish: Motorcycle was traveling on U.S. 14A when the driver lost control of the motorcycle. The motorcycle entered the ditch and the driver was thrown from the motorcycle. The male driver, 48, suffered minor injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 6:02 p.m. Wednesday, Interstate 90, mile marker 53, three miles west of Rapid City: The motorcycle was eastbound on Interstate 90 when it collided with a deer that had entered the roadway. The male drive, 71, suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

At 7:12 p.m. Wednesday, U.S. Highway 14A, mile marker 35, two miles south of Lead: The motorcycle was northbound on U.S. Highway 14A went it collided with a deer that had entered the roadway. The male driver, 53, was thrown from the motorcycle. The driver suffered minor injuries. He was wearing a helmet.
