College Vollleyball: BHSU and School of Mines drop opening matches

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Black Hills State University volleyball team fell in day one of the Country Inn and Suites Invitational in Sioux Falls on Friday afternoon. William Jewell College took match one, 3-1, and the University of Sioux Falls won the second match, 3-0.

Black Hills State starts 0-2 on the season, while William Jewell and USF begin 1-0 on the season.

Game 1: William Jewell 3, BHSU 1

The Yellow Jackets took the Cardinals to four sets, falling short of a victory. The Green and Gold took set one and lost the next three. The sets went as follows: 25-22, 25-14, 25-22, and 26-24.

In the first set, the Cardinals kept it close with the Yellow Jackets as both teams traded points until 19-all. From there, BHSU scored three straight points to increase the lead to 19-22. William Jewell scored two points to come within one at 22-21, but it was not enough as BHSU pulled out the win, 25-22.

In the third set, the Green and Gold pushed from a six-point deficit at 17-11 to go on a four-point run to trail, 22-21. However, it was not enough for BHSU to come out with the victory.

With the fourth tied at 13-all, the two teams traded points until 22-all, when BHSU scored two in a row to take the two-point lead at 24-22. With only one point left to go, William Jewell pushed backed to win the set 26-24, and the match 3-1.

Tara Hall recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Ellise Lech and Cheyenne Palu were right behind Hall registering eight kills each. Laurel Lech led the offense tallying 37 assists.

On defense, Sydney Ederhoff led with 18 digs. Palu worked alongside Ederhoff, blocking two.

Game 2: USF 3, BHSU 0

A seven-point run stunned BHSU in game two of the match, as they fell, 3-0, to USF. The scores went as follows: 25-10, 25-13, and 25-14.

In set one, the Yellow Jackets stayed neck-and-neck with the Cougars, only trailing by one or two points throughout. At 9-7, USF went on a four-point run to increase the lead to 13-7, before the Green and Gold stopped it with a kill from Ellise Lech.

At 14-9, the Cougars went on a seven-point run to hold off the Yellow Jackets and take the victory, 25-10.

In the second set, BHSU took the lead at 3-2 before the Cougars ran off with it using a 6-0 run to lead 8-4. The Yellow Jackets cut down the lead to five on a service ace by Sydney Ederhoff and trailed 15-10. However, that was not enough to claim a victory.

Laurel Lech led the offense and recorded 14 assists and five kills. Ellise Lech was alongside her sister, tallying five kills as well. Sierra Stugelmeyer went 4-for-8 on kills, for a .500 hitting percentage to lead the team.

On defense, Ederhoff tallied 11 digs and Palu registered two blocks.

The Yellow Jackets return to action Saturday to take on Fort Hays State University and University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. First serve is scheduled for 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.


The South Dakota Tech Hardrockers opened their 2017 volleyball campaign with two losses.

In their first match at the Minot State Classic saw them fall 3-1 to Bemidji State. The Hardrockers then droped their second match to Minot State 3-2, dropping the fifth and deciding set 15-11.

The Hardrockers are back in action Saturday against Montana State-Billings and Minnesota State-Moorehead.
