Crago's recognized with AQHA Heritage Award

BELLE FOURCHE, SD – A national award that recognizes breeders who continue to uphold the ranching tradition has gone to a western South Dakota family whose roots run deep in Quarter Horse country.

Crago Cattle Co.  has been named as a Ranching Heritage Breeder by the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA).  Vince and Margaret Crago and sons Bruce, Ralph and Chuck and their families are all part of the legacy that traces itself back to 1887.  That’s the year Vince's grandfather immigrated to  South Dakota from England. The 320 acre homestead was first an orchard.  Then in the late 1920’s, son Charles purchased the land, selling milk, fruit and vegetables to make it through the Great Depression of the 1930’s.  That was followed by developing cattle, draft and ranch horses.

The brand was first registered in 1957 as a partnership between father and mother, Vince and Margaret, and their three sons: Bruce, Ralph and Chuck. Following the death of Vince and after Chuck left to run his own operation, the brand is still used for the Crago Cattle Co. Quarter Horses - the rocking chair horse brand that has represented the family for over 60 years.

In 1958, the first registered Quarter Horses were purchased. Later, a registered stud that was a grandsire to the second stud he purchased, Beckwith Dun, was added.  The Beckwith line was in the family since Margaret was a Beckwith from the Midland, SD area, where her family developed  the Beckwith Dun pedigree that would become the cornerstone of the Crago’s breeding program.

The Crago sons and families are the first to credit their folks, Vince and Margaret for introducing Quarter Horses to the ranch.  Each has been helped in continuing in the ranching business and they took to their parents as examples of true ranchers and stewards.
