Democratic candidates for Attorney General answer questions in Sturgis

News Staff - June 13, 2018

STURGIS, S.D. - The two candidates running for Attorney General on the Democratic ticket held a question and answer forum in Sturgis Tuesday night.

Tatewin Means and Randy Seiler talked about the issues they both would fight for as Attorney General.

Means is a former Oglala Sioux Tribe Attorney General and Seiler is the former U.S. Attorney for South Dakota.

Both agree on many issues, such as better mental health care and rehabilitation of drug offenders.

Means says it is a crisis.

"First and foremost, we have to be willing to treat addiction and mental health issues as a public health crisis, that's what they are," said Means. "And making law enforcement, incarceration, and prosecution only a small part of that picture."

Seiler wants a comprehensive approach.

"Charging people with felonies or putting them in prison because they turn to drugs at a time of crisis in their life is not the right approach, so I want to bring more of a comprehensive, ecosystem approach," said Seiler.

Both candidates will be attending this weekend's Democrat convention in Sioux Falls, where one will be selected to represent the party for the upcoming November general election.
