Donna Lie, 70, of Spearfish, passed away on January 7, 2018. Her husband Eric was at her side.

Donna was born on January 4, 1948 in Bakersfield, California, to Herman and Audrey Rabenberg. Her early years were spent on farms in Marshall County, South Dakota, Cut Bank, Montana, and Bowdel, South Dakota. After graduating from Britton High School in 1966, she graduated from Northern State College in Aberdeen with degrees in Biology and Education. She taught science classes in Milbank and Harrold, South Dakota. By 1974, she was ready for a change. Donna entered USD to work on a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. She married Eric Lie on June 5, 1975. She received her BFA in July, 1976. Donna taught art at Labre Indian School in Ashland, Montana for two years and taught in the Belle Fourche School System for twenty years, until her career was cut short by Parkinson ’s disease. She was an accomplished artist in several mediums. Her 24 year struggle with Parkinson’s wrought many changes in the forms of her art work took, but the disease never defeated her.

She and Eric resided in Spearfish where they designed and helped with the construction of two homes. Donna loved to travel with Eric. Together they traveled twice to the Swiss Alps, took in sunsets in Canada, marveled at the changing leaves in Vermont, volksmarched Crazy Horse and survived a close encounter with a bison at Wind Cave.

Donna is survived by her husband, Eric Lie and sister, Linda Hanner. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial services will be at 1:00 PM on January 12, 2018 at All Angels Episcopal Church in Spearfish. Inurnment will be held at a later date.
