Erickson's 19 points leads BHSU past FLC in Quarterfinals
BHSU Athletics Release - February 28, 2018

SPEARFISH, S.D.The Black Hills State women's basketball team held on to defeat Fort Lewis, 59-56, on Tuesday evening in the RMAC Quarterfinals.

Rachel Erickson had 19 points to lead the way for the Yellow Jackets (23-6, 16-6 RMAC). Lyndzi Rich had 14 points, while Keely Bertram pulled down 10 rebounds.

Although Katie Messler scored the first two points for the Yellow Jackets, the Skyhawks (20-9, 14-8 RMAC) ended the first quarter on a 6-2 run, and held a five-point lead, 16-11, at the end of the period. In the second period, BHSU came back to take a one point lead, 19-18, with 5:28 remaining. The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half, when Fort Lewis took a one-point lead, 27-26, into the locker room.

Messler began the third quarter with a basket assisted by Julia Seamans, and Fort Lewis responded with a layup of its own. However, with 7:31 left in the period, Bertram grabbed an offense rebound and put it back up and in to give the Green and Gold a 30-29 lead, and the Yellow Jackets would not trail for the remainder of the game. BHSU led by four, 41-37, heading into the fourth quarter.

The Yellow Jackets pushed out the lead to as many as 10 points in the fourth, but the Skyhawks clawed back into the game, drawing with two, 58-56, when RMAC Freshman of the Year Vivian Gray hit a three-pointer with 16 seconds remaining. However, Erickson was able to sink one-of-two free throws with 14 seconds left, and the Green and Gold played good defense, forcing a tough shot as time expired by Briana Clah, which rattled off the rim, securing the victory for the home team.

BHSU shot 32.2 percent from the field (19-for-59), while FLC was 32.1 percent from the floor (17-for-53). The Yellow Jackets were 6-for-17 (35.3 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Skyhawks were 5-for-18 (27.8 percent) on three-pointers. The Green and Gold were outrebounded by Fort Lewis, 44-33.

Jordan Carter led the way for the Skyhawks with 14 points, while Vivian Gray had 13, and Kayla Herrera added 11.

The Yellow Jackets now move on to the RMAC Semifinals on Saturday, March 2. BHSU will travel to Denver to take on No. 2 MSU Denver.
