Firefighters stand watch at Sturgis funeral home for David Fischer

The Associated Press - September 12, 2018

STURGIS, S.D. - Firefighters stand watch around the clock at a funeral home in Sturgis where the body of a fallen comrade has been taken.

Forty-three-year-old David Fischer died while fighting a house fire in Tilford last Friday. The homeowner, 82-year-old Raymond Bachmeier, also died.

KOTA-TV says firefighters will stay with Fischer's body at Kinkade Funeral Chapel until his funeral service on Saturday at Sturgis Brown High School.

The National Guard, law enforcement officers, and the U.S. Forest Service are also paying their respects at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Steven Monteforte of SD LAST says, "When a firefighter volunteers himself, or when someone volunteers themselves and they die in the line of duty, that is the ultimate sacrifice. Whether it's fire, police, EMS, military, they are giving themselves up. They gave their lives up to protect others so it is the absolute least that we can do to honor those that have fallen."

Fischer served as an assistant fire chief of the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department and was a 22-year veteran of the department. He was also a member of the Rapid City-based 82nd Civil Support team with the South Dakota National Guard.
