- November 7, 2017

Frances “Granny Turtle” Makepeace was born in Brooklyn, NY.  She moved to South Dakota in the early ‘90s.  While visiting her daughter in Southern, California, she became critically ill and passed away peacefully on November 2nd.

Upon her death, she was surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She accomplished many things in her life including surviving the Great Depression.  She walked with MLK and Malcom X for Civil Rights in the South; she campaigned with Cesar Chavez in Delano, CA for farmworkers and immigration rights and was once investigated by the FBI for her involvement in the Civil Rights movement. She graduated with a Master’s Degree in Human Services and Social Work from UCLA.  She survived polio in the ‘50’s and lived for 2 years in an Iron Lung.

Having been told she would never walk again, she struggled through therapy and through determination was able to walk out of the rehabilitation facility and lived a long, healthy live devoted to helping others and bringing joy to all who knew her.

Services in California will be held on Friday, November 10th at 3:00 p.m. at Crippen Mortuary with interment of the ashes in the spring in South Dakota.

“As I see it, life is like a party; you’re having a great time making new friends, maybe even meet a cute boy and you never want it to end.  Then you start to see people leaving and you realize that you too will have to leave soon, because like life, all parties eventually have to come to an end.”  - (Frances Makepeace)
