John Walt Segrist was born on July 31, 1942 in Clarinda, Iowa to George and Janice (Walt) Segrist. He passed away peacefully on August 26, 2017 at his home in Spearfish, SD, surrounded by his wife, Cathy, of 52 years, and three sons, Jay, Jeremy, and Jedd. John had courageously battled cancer for 5 years.

John graduated from Clarinda High School in 1960. That Fall he entered college at the University of Nebraska where he became a member of ATO and Phi Eta Sigma. John and Cathy Carr met in February, 1965 and were married on August 15, 1965, in Valentine, NE at the Presbyterian Church. They lived in Lincoln where John attended dental school and Cathy taught at Calvert School.

After John’s graduation from dental school in 1968, he accepted a U.S. Army rotating dental internship in Fort Dix, N.J. In the summer of 1969 John went to Fort Sam Houston, TX for basic training, then on to Fort Hood, TX until April 1970 when he received orders to Vietnam. Cathy went to her family ranch near Mission, SD to await the birth of their first son, Jay. John worked at the 27th Surgical Hospital in Chu Lai, South Vietnam. Upon returning to the US, John and family finished his tour of duty at Ft. Leonardwood, MO.

In August, 1971, John established a family dental practice in Alliance, NE. During his time in Alliance, John served on the following boards: Nebraska Boy's Ranch, Panhandle Men's Club, Alliance Board of Education, and Alliance Parks Board. John also served as Trustee for the Nebraska Dental Association.

John, Cathy, and the three boys spent many weekends camping in the Black Hills. They enjoyed it so much that in 1997, finding themselves "empty-nesters," John and Cathy purchased a home in Spearfish and drove up after work most weekends. John retired from dentistry in 2001, and he and Cathy moved to Mountain Plains II in Spearfish in 2004, where they loved hosting for family and friends. John had a big birthday party to celebrate his 75th birthday, just a month prior to his passing.

During his time in Spearfish, John served as Treasurer of Lions Club (receiving the Melvin Jones Award in 2014), Board Member of Spearfish Canyon Country Club (President for 2 years), and Treasurer of Spearfish Economic Development. He was an avid golfer and loved riding his bike around the Black Hills. And he of course loved his Nebraska Cornhusker football team - he was a lifelong season ticket holder. Throughout his life, John enjoyed a strong balance of work, family, friends, and fun. He will be missed dearly.

John is survived by his wife (Cathy), three sons (Jay, Jeremy, Jedd), and six grandchildren (D’Kota, Jaylee, Dawson, Dayler, Lauren, and Blake). He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Janice. John also had many dear friends. He was very proud of his friendships.

Funeral services will be held at Spearfish United Methodist Church on Wednesday, August 30 at 2 pm. The ceremony will be led by Pastor Scott McKirdy, burial will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers and gifts, for those wishing to contribute, the family has asked that donations be given to one of the following charities: Spearfish United Methodist Church, Storybook Island, or Spearfish Canyon Country Club.
