Kurt was born February 24, 1951, in South Bend, Indiana, to Donald and Shirley (Riggs) Cruickshank. Kurt graduated from Jackson High School in South Bend in 1969. He loved the sport of football, playing all 4 years of high school.

After graduating high school, Kurt attended Indiana State University majoring in Sociology and then went on to attend Pikes Peak College obtaining a degree in Police Science and an Associate's Degree in General Studies. He completed his Peace Officer Certification in Indiana, Colorado, and South Dakota. He was also certified as a Fire Fighter I and II and as a Wildland Fire Fighter. He also served as a 32 Degree Mason.

Kurt married the love of his life, Peggy Maier, on July 31, 1971. This marriage was blessed with 2 children: son, Shawn, and daughter, Rebecca.

In 1974, Kurt and Peggy both joined the U.S. Army on the "Buddy System." Kurt served 3 years of active duty as a Military Police Officer.

Kurt retired from the Sturgis Police Department in November 2003. Thereafter, he continued working for non-profit animal rescue organizations participating in and was recognized in the rescue efforts and care of animals during disasters from 2003 thru 2017. He was one of the Founders of the South Dakota Animal Control Association. He was a real animal lover! Even after retiring from the Sturgis PD, he continued his police work as a reserve officer for Butte County Sheriff Department.

Kurt loved spending time with family and friends. He loved life enjoying fishing, camping, hunting, 4-wheeling, and gold panning. He loved talking to people. If he didn't know you at the start of a conversation, he knew you when it ended.

Kurt had four grandchildren, which meant the world to him. He dearly loved Colton and Connor Cruickshank and Jacob and Kiley Mellum. He and his grandkids always had fishing contests of who would be the lucky one to catch the BIG fish and who would catch the mini fish.

Kurt Douglas Cruickshank, 67, of Sturgis, passed away on April 27, 2018, at Saint Mary's Mayo Hospital in Rochester, MN.

He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Peggy, of Sturgis, SD; his son, Shawn (Cindy) Cruickshank of Piedmont, SD; his daughter, Rebecca (Shay) Mellum of Rapid City, SD; four grandchildren, Colton and Connor Cruickshank and Jacob and Kiley Mellum; his aunt, Nancy; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 7, 2018, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Inurnment, with military honors, will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Memorials have been established to; American Legion Post # 33 Sturgis Titans / Scoopers and Black Hills Rapid Soccer.
