Leonard Claus Wenck, 91, of Spearfish, and formerly of Morristown, SD, passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2017.

Leonard was born December 29, 1925, in Andover, SD, a son to Herman and Lena (Wohltman) Wenck. After graduating from Andover High School, Leonard proudly served in the Army in Italy during World War II, earning the rank of tech sergeant and good conduct honors. He was honorably discharged in 1945. After military duty, Leonard returned to Morristown, SD, to take over his uncle’s ranch. On June 3, 1950, Leonard married the love of his life, Violet Lovitt at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Watauga, SD. They adopted and loved two children into their family, Max David Wenck in 1960 and Suzanne Sara Wenck in 1962. Together with Violet, Leonard ran a cow/calf operation and raised wheat for nearly 50 years. During this time, he served his community in many ways. He was a member of the ASCS Committee, Election Board, USDA Census team, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also enjoyed mentoring youth as a 4-H leader and GFP Hunter Safety Instructor. In 2001, Leonard sold the ranch to his son, Max, and retired with his family to Spearfish, SD. Here he enjoyed gardening, renovating old horse buggies, fishing and spending time with family and friends. Twice a year, he would travel to Wisconsin to help his son, Max, with planting and harvesting corn and soybeans.

Leonard was a farmer and a friend to all. A man of deep faith, he was a lifetime member of the WELS Lutheran Church, serving as president at Christ Lutheran in Morristown, SD, and a dedicated member at Hope Lutheran Church in Spearfish, SD.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Violet; son, Max (Linda) Wenck of East Troy, WI; daughter, Suzanne Wenck of Spearfish; and two sisters, Doris Alberts of Britton, and Darlys Kruse of Mitchell; sister-in-law, Margaret Wenck of Texas; grandchildren, Taylor, Austin and Andrea; and many nephews, nieces and friends. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Howard Wenck, twin brother, Lloyd Wenck, sister, Dileen Ninke, and an infant brother and sister.

A funeral service will be held at Hope Lutheran Church in Spearfish on Monday, December 4, at 11 am, with visitation starting at 10 am. Immediately following the service, burial with full military honors will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery and a late lunch will be served back at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to benefit Hope Lutheran Church.
