Lonuld "Lonny" Balo was born in Deadwood, SD, on April 27, 1960, to Guy and Ilene (Carlson) Balo.  He lived around Whitewood Valley until 1968 when they moved to the home ranch down Whitewood Valley where he lived the rest of his life.  Lonny was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at the Immanuel Lutheran Church.  On October 6, 1979, he married the love of his life, Mona Heggem.  To this union, 2 children were born, Guy Melvin and Etta Marie.  He was blessed with a loving family, wonderful in-laws, and good friends.  For that he thanks his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

He attended Whitewood Elementary and graduated from Sturgis Brown High School in 1978.  After high school, he continued doing what he loved, working with his family on the ranch in the dairy & progressing into their beef cattle. Lonny always enjoyed helping anyone he could. He had the gift of taking what some may have seen as a piece of junk & tinkering with it until it sprang into a new life of its own.  Lonny’s life experiences always provided opportunity for a good joke even if its origin came from a negative situation.  Lonny had the God given gift to laugh at himself or any situation quicker than most people.  He always appreciated people who accepted him for who he was.  To his family & friends, respect & humor were Lonny’s strong suits.  A more humble person is hard to find.  Lonny’s qualities are too numerous for words.

Lonny, 57, passed away March 9, 2018, at home after a 7 year battle with ALS.  He got to meet his 3 day old granddaughter, Sophie, just hours before he changed his address to heaven.  Even though he couldn’t hold his grandchildren in his hands he held them in his heart.

Grateful for sharing his life include his wife of 38 years, Mona; father, Guy L; son, Guy Melvin (Dawn Vassalotti), Whitewood Valley; daughter; Etta (Mike) Knuth; 3 grandchildren: Garrett William, Levi Lonuld, and Sophie Rose Knuth, Hettinger, ND.  He is also survived by sisters, Kathy (Jube) Kester, New Raymer, CO, Kyla (Gene) Thompson, Whitewood Valley, SD, and Sherri (Barry) Knippling, Ft. Thomson, SD; in-laws, Marvin (Linda) Heggem, Meridianville, AL, Mark (Jamea) Heggem, Billings, MT, and Marcia (Mark) Lermeny, Reva, SD; close friends, Stan and Sharon Holsclaw; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ilene; infant sister, Sharon; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Melvin and Martha Heggem.

Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 17, 2018, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Whitewood.  Inurnment will be at a later date.
