Lonny “Bumpa” Smith, 51, of St. Onge, South Dakota passed away July 20, 2018 at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

He was born August 20, 1966 in Belle Fourche to Loren and Frieda (Heinert) Smith.

In high school, Lonny was a member of the National Honor Society, and played second chair trumpet in the high school band.  He graduated with honors in 1984 from Belle Fourche High School.

Lonny worked with his father at the meat market and enjoyed playing drums and singing with his dad's band, Loren and Country.  In 1988, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. While in the Air Force, Lonny served one year in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1992, with an SRA E4 status.  

On August 17, 1991, he married the love of his life, Sue. The couple lived in Minot, ND until Lonny was discharged from the service. They made their home in St. Onge, SD, and Lonny was employed at the Sturgis Meat Service for nine years. In 2000, Lonny took a store manager job in Sundance Wyoming. In 2006, Lonny and Sue bought the S.O.B. "St. Onge Bar" and moved back to the community that became their home in the St. Onge Valley. 

Lonny loved to ride his Harley and was a member of the Militiamen Veteran's Motorcyle Club. The members of the club held a special place in Lonny's heart, and he considered them family. Lonny was also a member of the United Church of Christ. Lonny was known throughout the area for cooking the best prime rib in the country at the St. Onge Bar, where people from all over the nation have complimented his cooking. Lonny enjoyed music, reading, hunting and fishing. Most of all, Bumpa enjoyed spending time with his ten grandkids.

He is survived by his father and mother, Loren and Rosie Smith of McMinnville, OR; wife, Susan Smith of St. Onge; son, Randy Landsverk of Crosby, ND; daughter, Angela (Wade) Vissia of Belle Fourche; 10 grandchildren, Will Landsverk, Hunter Vissia, Taylor Landsverk, Blake Vissia, Hailey Landsverk, Michelle Landsverk, Evan Vissia, Abby Vissia, Emma Landsverk and Brenna Landsverk; brothers-in law, Dan (Linda) Borkenhagen and Bill (Theresa) Borkenhagen all of Bullhead, AZ; his sister, Lorena Smith of McMinnville, OR and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; uncles, Johnny Heinert and Lee Smith; aunts, Fernel Butts and Loise Hartshorne; father and mother-in-law, Ron and Marge Borkenhagen.

A Ceremonial Tribute will be held Saturday, July 28 at 11:00 AM at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Belle Fourche with Reverend Del Neumeister and Reverend Dr. M.G. Martell Spagnolo officiating. 

Inurnment will take place at a later time at Black Hills National Cemetery.
