Man charged in shooting death has electronic monitoring order reinstated

News Staff - July 16, 2019

RAPID CITY, S.D. - A man charged in the shooting death of another man in Keystone was back in court Tuesday for a violation of his bond conditions.

Maxton James Pfeiffer had his electronic monitoring order reinstated after he was taken into custody due to a malfunction with his ankle bracelet.

Pfeiffer and his parents testified in court Tuesday that the ankle monitor Pfeiffer was wearing was not working correctly and that their rural Black Hills home is to blame for poor cell reception. They say that quickly drains the batter in the device.

Pennington County Judge Jeffrey Connolly ruled that Pfeiffer did violate the terms of his bond after his electronic monitor died and law enforcement was unable to immediately get in touch with him, leading to his re-arrest Friday. However, Connolly reinstated the electronic monitoring order after deeming that Pfeiffer is not a risk to the community and allowed him to return home.

Pfeiffer is accused of shooting to death 19-year-old Ty Scott in Keystone last year.

Scott's family had asked the judge to keep Pfeiffer in jail pending his trial.
