Mazie I. Asmussen, 93, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2017 at the Belle Fourche Healthcare Center.

She was born on June 3, 1924 in Newell, to Henry and Minnie (Syvajarvi) Ypparila. Mazie spent her whole childhood in Newell with her three brothers and two sisters. She graduated from Newell High School in 1942.

Mazie married Maurice (Moe) Asmussen on June 24, 1948 in Lead. To this union two sons were born, Marc and Mike. Together Mazie and Moe owned and operated Stone Insurance Agency for 38 years. Moe passed away on June 1, 1992.

Mazie was a doer, always busy. The saying was “better have a seat, Mazie’s coming” meaning, you better rest now because you won’t be able to soon. She helped plant over 21,000 plants a year during her 25 years as a member of the Lead Beautification Committee. She was a 50 year member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. And if that wasn’t enough, she was member of the First Presbyterian Church since 1948 and during that time she served as both a deacon and an elder. She did all of this while raising her two boys and working full-time with Moe in the insurance agency.

She remained in the Lead area until December of 2008 when she moved to Edgewood Vista Assisted Living Center in Spearfish. Due to health reasons she moved to Belle Fourche Healthcare Center in June of 2015 and remained until the time of her passing.

Mazie has left behind her sons, Marc (Pat) Asmussen, Lead, Mike (Laurie) Asmussen, Salt Lake City, UT; brother, Elmer Ypparila, Cody, WY; granddaughter, Brandee (Faustino) Becerra, Salt Lake City, UT, and Lyndsay (Jerry) Carlson, Salt Lake City, UT; and great grandchildren, Emilio, Diego, and Dominic Becerra, Leya and Eve Carlson.

In death she joins her parents, Henry and Minnie Ypparila; husband, Maurice (Moe) Asmussen; sisters, Helen Ypparila and Hazel Huhtala; and brothers, Edwin “Sunny” Ypparila and Howard Ypparila.

Services will be held at 9:00 am on Friday, November 10, 2017 at Black Hills National Cemetery with Pastor Jill Jennewein officiating.
