Meade County Commissioners scheduled to take road tour Thursday
Gary Matthews - July 12, 2018

STURGIS, S.D. – Meade County Commissioners will be taking a tour of county roads hit hard by this summer’s rains.

The commission has taken a beating from residents who say the roads are in terrible shape and need work.

Highway Superintendent Lincoln Shuck, who will be joining the commission on the tour, says his crews have been working hard to get them back into shape. Among them Pleasant Valley and Tilford Roads, where there are some spots that still need some work.

"We traveled Pleasant Valley and it held pretty well except for some bad spots. Tilford is okay, except going east. That is a whole different story and we plan to get out that way and do some work."

Shuck says work has also been done to help improve Elk Vale Road by the Rainbow Bible Ranch, where they plan to go back in next week to do some more blading.  Among some of the hardest hit, Shuck says they brought in some clean rock and built up the subgrade on it.

Shuck says they have also found some culverts in the Elm Springs area that have considerable damage, and will need to be replaced.

"We found four culverts that we will have to hit next week. It appears there are holes in the road where water came roaring through there."

Shuck says those areas have gotten some of the heaviest rain recently.

The commission road tour begins at 1:15 Thursday afternoon.
