Next year's rally logo unveiled; vendor numbers down this year

Gary Matthews - August 8, 2018

STURGIS, S.D. - As the 78th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally heads into the final push, city staff are already looking ahead to next year.

Today, Sturgis City Manager Daniel Ainslie was among those on top of a rally photo tower to unveil next year's logo.

The 79th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally logo includes a large 79, with Sturgis Motorcycle Rally below and the saying "The Legend Lives On" at the bottom. Next year's rally will run August 2nd through the 11th.

Members of SMRi joined Ainslie in the photo tower to unveil the logo.

Meanwhile, the city of Sturgis reports temporary vendor permits are down this year. As of Wednesday morning, the city had issue 617 licenses. This compares to 658 on Wednesday of 2017.

City spokeswoman Christina Steele says at least a portion of this variance has to do with fewer vendors purchasing two licenses. One license is good for 12 days.

As for garbage, Sturgis Public Works Director Rick Bush says they are up by 3-percent over 2017.

Ambulance calls are up as well -- with 144 vs 129 on this date in 2017.
