Paul Baldwin, 95 of Rapid City and formerly of Lead passed away at Rapid City Regional Hospital on January 24, 2018.

Paul Gardner Baldwin, the son of Charles E. Baldwin and Elvira Ellen (Nichols) Baldwin, was born February 5, 1922 on a farm near the town of Jeffers, in Cottonwood County, Minnesota. The family moved to a farm near Jesup, Iowa in 1925, and resided there with the exception of two years (1932-1933) in California, until he graduated from the Jesup Consolidated School with the class of 1939. In 1939 he moved with his parents to Long Beach, California where he attended and graduated from Long Beach Junior College in 1941.

After a year as an employee at Consolidated Aircraft Company in Sand Diego., California, Paul attended and received his B.S. degree in Commerce from the Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, Missouri in 1943. Paul had joined the U.S. Navy V-12 program in September, 1942, and after completing the Navy Supply Corps School at Harvard University was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy Supply Corps, April 1944. He served as the Supply and Disbursing Officer on the destroyer USS Eberle for eighteen months and was then assigned to the Office of the Foreign Liquidation Commissioner in Washington, D.C. where he served until his separation from service in August, 1946. Paul remained in the Naval Reserve and completed thirty years of service retiring in 1972 with the rank of Commander. During his service in World War II, Paul was awarded the European-African-Middle East Area Ribbon with one star, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon, the American Area Campaign Ribbon, the Army Commendation Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a drilling member of Supply Corps Company 11-3 at Terminal Island, CA for 23 years, and was Commanding Officer of that Unit in 1969 and 1970.

After his World War II service, Paul completed a year of graduate work at UCLA and received his M.A. degree at Long Beach State University in 1957. He began teaching in the Long Beach Unified School District in 1947 at Jordan High School where he taught business classes and served as Chairman of the Business Education Department for eleven years. He transferred to Wilson High School in 1958 where he taught business and social studies classes and served at various times as Chairman of the Business Education and 12th grade Social Studies Departments. Paul taught in the district for 38 years, and retired in 1984. He also taught various business classes for 27 years in the evening program of Long Beach Community College.

In addition to his teaching and active participation in his naval programs, Paul spent many years as a volunteer in the Long Beach Schools Federal Credit Union, where he served on the Supervisory Committee, as Chairman of the Credit Committee and as Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Paul was first married in 1945 while in the service. He had three children from that marriage, Jeffery M. Baldwin, Bullhead City, AZ, Janis L. Baldwin, Long Beach, CA and Daniel P. Baldwin, now deceased. Besides his two children, Paul is survived by his wife, Janice (Humphryes) Baldwin, whom he married in 1975, two grandchildren, Scott Baldwin and Mark Baldwin, Lakewood, CA. He is also survived by nephews, Robert Baldwin, State College, PA, Donald Baldwin, Tucker, GA, James Baldwin, San Diego, CA, Douglas Baldwin, Rochester, MN and niece, Audrey, Baldwin Hall, Chula Vista, CA. In addition to his parents and son, Daniel, Paul was preceded in death by one sister, Maude Baldwin Moore, three brothers, George, Raleigh, Harry and Victor, a niece Margaret Moore and a nephew, Charlie Baldwin.

After his retirement in 1984 from 38 years of teaching, Paul and his wife, Jan built a summer residence in the Black Hills of South Dakota near Lead, SD Jan’s home town. They lived in their summer home every year from June through October where they enjoyed pursuing their hobbies of golf, traveling and camaraderie of friends.

Paul and Jan moved to West Hills Village in Rapid City, SD on October 16, 2012 and have resided ever since.

Graveside memorial services will be 1:30 PM on January 31, 2018 at Black Hills National Cemetery with full military honors by the US Navy and the Spearfish Honor Guard.
