Rally Update - third fatality reported

Gary Matthews - August 8, 2018

STURGIS, S.D. – The South Dakota Highway Patrol says a motorcyclist died Tuesday after a crash on Sturgis Road near Piedmont.

The male driver is the third fatality included in this year’s Sturgis Motorcycle Rally report.

In their latest rally report, the patrol says the accident happened just before 11:30 Tuesday morning on Sturgis Road about a mile and a half from Piedmont.

The motorcycle went off the roadway, into the north ditch, hit a delineator pole and eventually rolled. The 63-year-old driver was thrown from the motorcycle and died en route to the hospital. He was not wearing a helmet.

Tuesday was a busy day for first responders.

The patrol reported 10 injury crashes, including two crashes in which motorcycle operators tumbled down a steep cliff. In one crash, a motorcyclist fell down a steep hill after failing to negotiate a curve on Nemo Road. In another accident, a motorcyclist fell 80 feet down a cliff after hitting the guard rail on Highway 244 west of Keystone.

In all, the patrol has reported 33 injury accidents through Tuesday this year. That is down from last year’s 41.

Meanwhile, data from the South Dakota Department of Transportation indicates traffic is up 3.8-percent overall for the first five days of the rally compared to the same time last year.

On Tuesday, D-O-T traffic counters registered 60,281 vehicles entering Sturgis. That is up 8.8-percent over last year.

The five day total so far is 281,408.
