Rodney (Rod) Kensrud, 81, of Fargo, passed away on February 20th in Falls Church, VA.

He was born on January 24, 1937 near Portland, North Dakota. Rod was the 4th child born to the late Olander and Agnes (Gronland) Kensrud of Portland. He spent most of his youth in the Portland area until he entered the military in 1952. After basic training, Rod joined the 82nd Airborne as a paratrooper. His final year of service was spent in Alaska training for cold weather conditions. In November of 1957, Rod was discharged from the Army and returned to North Dakota where he lived in Fargo for 56 years.

After his military experience, Rod worked in construction building homes. In the winter when layoffs were common, he attended Dakota Business College in Fargo. It was there where he met and later married his wife, Deanna Kolb of Bison, South Dakota. His first position after completing his course work at Dakota Business College was with Gate City Savings & Loan where he was employed for 15 years. Rod then accepted a position with Mortgage Guarantee Insurance Company of Milwaukee (MGIC). He sold mortgage insurance to banks, savings and loans in three states for 15 years and ended his financial career as the manager of Academy Mortgage in Fargo. In retirement, Rod became a private investigator doing background checks for 30 out of state companies until he officially retired in 1999.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Olander and Agnes; an older brother, G Leroy and two older sisters, Esther and Gloria.

He is survived by his wife, Deanna; children, Nadine Murphy of Weare, NH and Ryan of Alexandria, VA, and two grandchildren, Lawson Murphy and Annika Kensrud and brother, Darrel (Karen) Kensrud.

A service will be held 1:00pm on April 14, 2018 at the American Lutheran Church in Bison with Pastor Tera Kossow officiating followed by the burial at Date Cemetery south Bison, SD. Military Honors will be provided by the Rogers-Smith American Legion Post #255 of Bison.
