SPEARFISH, S.D. - The Sturgis Scoopers came into the 2017 season with a lot of optimism -- and it showed Saturday night -- as they ran past the Belle Fourche Broncs 40 to 21.

Belle Fourche started the game fast; as Dylan Burns scampered 20 yards into the end zone to break the scoreless tie with 9:37 left in the first quarter. The run came after  a 30-minute lightning delay.

But, Sturgis answered with a 51 yard touchdown run by Noah Wamsher that made the score 7-6. Sturgis attempted the two-point conversion, but failed.

Sturgis would take the lead for good in the first quarter on a 24-yard run by Wamsher with 6:30 remaining. Wamsher's run came after a Belle Fourche fumble that set the Scoopers up in Bronc territory. A successful 2-point conversion made the score 14-7. Sturgis would score again just before halftime on a 50-yard interception return. Gavin West stepped in front of a Tate Hostetter pass and took it to the house for a 20-7 halftime lead.

Sturgis stayed strong in the second half with a 20-yard touchdown run by Cameron Brinkman and a 3-yard tochdown run by Trevor Erlenbush. That 3-yard touchdown capped off a 95-yard drive by the Scoopers that came after the Sturgis defense stopped Belle Fourche on fourth and short.

Belle Fourche made things interesting in the third on a kickoff return for a touchdown by Morgan Garrett. But, Sturgis put the game away when Carter Neuschwander went 21 yards for a fourth quarter score with 5:34 remaining.

Up next, Sturgis will play Douglas on Friday night. The game will be heard on KBHB with a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
