South Dakota Crop Condition Ratings Decline Slightly

UNDATED - For the week ending Sunday, crop condition ratings declined slightly for all commodities following a mostly dry week, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. The condition of range and pasturelands were also rated lower as drought conditions persisted in many areas of South Dakota. Below normal temperatures were recorded across much of the east as overnight lows fell into the mid to low 30s Sunday morning. There were 6.1 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 28 percent very short, 35 short, 35 adequate, and 2 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 28 percent very short, 32 short, 39 adequate, and 1 surplus.

Winter wheat condition rated 21 percent very poor, 35 poor, 34 fair, 10 good, and 0 excellent. Winter wheat coloring was 68 percent, near 71 last year. Mature was 6 percent.

Spring wheat condition rated 31 percent very poor, 31 poor, 26 fair, 11 good, and 1 excellent. Spring wheat jointed was 99 percent. Headed was 85 percent, ahead of 70 last year, and well ahead of 58 for the five-year average. Coloring was 17 percent.

Oats condition rated 17 percent very poor, 23 poor, 33 fair, 25 good, and 2 excellent. Oats jointed was 98 percent, near 96 last year. Headed was 87 percent, ahead of 78 last year and 70 average. Coloring was 23 percent. Mature was 1 percent.

Barley condition rated 38 percent very poor, 29 poor, 31 fair, 2 good, and 0 excellent. Barley jointed was 96 percent, ahead of 89 last year. Headed was 74 percent, ahead of 56 last year, and well ahead of 48 average. Coloring was 2 percent.

Corn condition rated 7 percent very poor, 13 poor, 34 fair, 43 good, and 3 excellent.

Soybean condition rated 9 percent very poor, 12 poor, 40 fair, 36 good, and 3 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 6 percent, near 4 last year and 5 average.

Sorghum condition rated 9 percent very poor, 21 poor, 60 fair, 10 good, and 0 excellent. Sorghum emerged was 87 percent, ahead of 79 last year and 76 average.

Sunflower condition rated 6 percent very poor, 21 poor, 58 fair, 15 good, and 0 excellent. Sunflowers planted was 98 percent, near 95 last year, and ahead of 86 average. Emerged was 75 percent.

Alfalfa condition rated 40 percent very poor, 36 poor, 15 fair, 8 good, and 1 excellent. Alfalfa first cutting was 87 percent complete, near 85 last year, and well ahead of 64 average. Second cutting was 4 percent, near 8 last year.

Pasture and range condition rated 28 percent very poor, 25 poor, 26 fair, 19 good, and 2 excellent.

Stock water supplies rated 17 percent very short, 26 short, 55 adequate, and 2 surplus.
