South Dakota Hog Inventory Up 14 Percent

UNDATED - South Dakota inventory of all hogs and pigs on March 1, 2018, was 1.66 million head, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. This was up 14 percent from March 1, 2017, and up 6 percent from December 1, 2017.

Breeding hog inventory, at 235,000 head, was up 18 percent from March 1, 2017, and up 9 percent from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 1.43 million head, was up 14 percent from last year, and up 6 percent from last quarter.

The December 2017 - February 2018 South Dakota pig crop, at 1.27 million head, was up 10 percent from 2017. Sows farrowed during the period totaled 111,000 head, up 9 percent from last year. The average pigs saved per litter was a record high of 11.45 for the December - February period, compared to 11.30 last year.

South Dakota hog producers intend to farrow 113,000 sows during the March - May 2018 quarter, up 12 percent from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago. Intended farrowings for June - August 2018 are 114,000 sows, up 9 percent from the actual farrowings during the same period the previous year.
