Police negotiate with suspect to end Friday night standoff

Standoff in Rapid City ends peacefully

Gary Matthews - June 9, 2018

RAPID CITY, S.D. - A standoff with police overnight in Rapid City has ended peacefully.

According to Captain Tony Harrison from the Special Response Team, they were called in to assist with a situation of an armed suspect barricaded in a residence on Gnugnuska Drive.

Nearby residences were evacuated and the public was being urged to stay away as they dealt with the suspect.

Harrison says the S.R.T. eventually entered the home and one suspect in an Aggravated Assault from earlier in the evening exited the residence during the response.

"We were able to pull the suspect from the home after negotiations. He is identified as Jesse Runnels of Gordon, Nebraska and arrested for aggravated assault. He was the subject involved in Friday's assault and was taken to the Pennington County jail."

Runnels was placed under arrest for the assault.

All residents that were displaced from their homes were allowed to return.

Harrison says this case is unrelated to a Thursday incident in which a man fired a gun from one apartment into another.

That suspect is still being sought.
