Stray Gathering at stock show celebrates cowboy roots and country music

News Staff - January 13, 2020

RAPID CITY, SD - If you’re a rancher, you do stray gathering for a living.  Leave it to a cowboy to make a competition out of chore work which is what the Black Hills Stock Show Stray Gathering is – a competition with a hefty payout and a chance for fans to put some money in their pocket too.  Set on a Friday, January 31, Black Hills Stock Show Operations Manager and Events Coordinator John Kaiser describes it like this;  “Team roping mixed with steer tying,  all in one, chaotic two minutes  which is the time limit.”

As many as 40 men’s teams and 10 women’s teams, each consisting of four members, will head, heel and tie for the fastest times.  Each team will break into two pairs with the objective to rope and tie two steers in a two-minute time limit. That takes riders and horses who know what they’re doing. “It helps to be handy, says Kaiser.  “Most come with pretty cowy horses and a steady loop.”

The top 10 men’s teams and top three women’s teams will advance to a finals.  As part of the fun, a Calcutta will be held on the teams where those in the audience can bid on the team they think will win.

Entries start at 5:00pm with the event getting underway at 7:00pm. The night wraps up with live music by Kenny Feidler  & The Cowboy Killers. Returning to the roots of cowboy’ing, the stock show kicks off with a tip of the hat to those long-ago wranglers, country and music and no charge for the fun.
