Sturgis Council gets rally numbers; receives update on ambulance fundraising

Gary Matthews - October 8, 2019

STURGIS, S.D. – Sturgis Council members heard the financial report for the 2019 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally at their first meeting of the month Monday.

The Sturgis Rally brought in a total of $2,022,931 this year and spent approximately $636,000 in charitable donations.

The City spent more than $1.53 million overall, about $200,000 more than it spent the previous year.

The total net profit slightly decreased from 2018 totaling out at $1.1 million.

The council also got an update from a group trying to raise enough money to continue city-owned ambulance service going to the rural residents outside Sturgis City limits.

The group told council members they have close to $18,000 raised so far.

The council is giving rural residents until the end of the year to come up with the needed money to continue the service that Sturgis residents pay for in their property taxes.

But, Ross Lamphere with the Rural Sturgis Ambulance Group, says fundraising only last so long, and he’s still in favor of forming an ambulance district.

Rural voters in late 2018 turned down a plan to begin setting up a district.
