ThunderWolves' Pressure Trips Up Hardrocker Men; Women fall short

PUEBLO, Colo. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team let an 18-point lead slip away in the second half of action Friday night as the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves pulled off a late rally to defeat the Hardrockers, 87-74, during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup in Pueblo, Colo.

The T-Wolves swapped out their game plan in the second half and applied a crippling full-court press on the 'Rockers that netted the results they were looking for. They caused some turnovers and disrupted the rhythm of SD Mines' offense that worked so effectively in the early goings.

SD Mines held a 14-point advantage at halftime, 44-30, and extended their edge to 18 points at the 16-minute mark. CSUP's captured the momentum and tied the game around the 10-minute mark and then surged ahead to get the win. The Pack outscored SD Mines, 57-30, in the second half of play.

The Hardrockers were red hot in the first half shooting 56.7 percent from the field while CSU-Pueblo found their groove over the final 20 minutes making good on 18-32 shots for 56.3 percent shooting from the field.

For the game, the 'Rockers made good on 26-58 attempts to shoot 44.8 percent from the field. The visitors connected on 4-18 from three-point range and converted 18-28 free throw tries. They collected 33 rebounds, had 10 assists and two steals.

Meanwhile, PUEBLO, Colo. --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team was overwhelmed Friday night by the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's top team --- CSU-Pueblo. The ThunderWolves defeated the Lady Hardrockers, 71-45, in Pueblo, Colo.

The Pack, who are now a perfect 8-0 in the RMAC, held SD Mines, the conference's top offense, to just six points in the second quarter and eight in the third period to help earn the win. CSUP was up, 22-13 after the first 10 minutes and then went into halftime with a 33-19 advantages.

The home team kept up the intensity in the second half, taking a 56-27 edge after three quarters. The Hardrockers did outscore CSUP, 18-15, over the final 10 minutes of the game.

The Lady 'Rockers were a little cold on offense, shooting just 33 percent from the field converting 18-54 attempts. SD Mines made good on 6-27 from three-point range and were 3-3 from the free throw line. The visitors came down with 31 rebounds, notched 14 assists, six steals and one block.

The T-Wolves hit 26-58 baskets to shoot 44.8 percent from the field. They cashed in for 9-21 from behind the arch, converted 10-12 from the free throw line, came down with 38 rebounds, recorded 17 assists, 10 steals and four blocks.

Individually for the 'Rockers, sophomore Sami Steffeck led the way for her squad with 13 points, four rebounds and two steals. Freshman Ryan Weiss added eight points, five rebounds, three assists, one steal and one blocked shots. Sophomore Cooper Courtney contributed with seven points.
