Tornadoes, flooding, hail from severe thunderstorms Tuesday night

Gary Matthews - July 17, 2019

UNDATED - A round of severe weather brought tornadoes, hail and flooding to parts of the area Tuesday night.

The National Weather Service in Rapid City says a tornado touched down about a mile south of I-90 along the Campbell and Crook County line. The tornado was on the ground for approximately 10 minutes.

There have been no reports of any injuries or major damage from the twister.

Meanwhile, that same storm brought 3-inch hail to the Moorcroft area and 1.75-inch hail hit the Spearfish area around 8:00 p.m.

Overnight, thunderstorms dumped heavy rain in the Hoover area of Butte County, shutting down Highway 79.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation says Highway 79 is still closed from the Highway 168 junction to the junction of Highway 20 at Reva because the heavy flooding caused damage to the roadway.

Motorists will need to take an alternate route until repairs can be made when conditions allow.
