Toxicology results indicate drugs in system of man found dead near Deadwood
News Staff - June 9, 2018

DEADWOOD, S.D. – Authorities say numerous types of drugs were found in the system of a deceased Spearfish man who went missing from Deadwood Jan. 16 and whose body was found in a remote area near The Lodge at Deadwood April 11.

Police Chief Kelly Fuller released results of the final autopsy report for 28-year-old Christopher Oien of Spearfish Friday morning.

Fuller says Oien died of hypothermia, and extensive toxicology studies showed the presence of methamphetamine and its metabolite amphetamine in his system. Fuller says studies also revealed the presence of marijuana and a drug found in cough suppressants and other over the country cold medicines.

Investigators said autopsy findings found no evidence of external trauma to Oien.

Based on these facts, officials have ruled the cause of death to be hypothermia due to exposure.

Fuller says “The investigation has been closed on the matter.”

Oien disappeared in mid-January – last seen alive on video tape in Deadwood. His body was found April 11 in a remote area one-quarter mile southwest of The Lodge by a subject who was searching for deer shed antlers.
