Two deputies receive Medal of Distinguished Service Award

News Staff - October 20, 2018

RAPID CITY, S.D. - Pennington County Sheriff’s Deputies Tana Tallon and Rusty Schmidt have been awarded the Medal of Distinguished Service. Both were involved with the rescue of a ten-year-old girl during a Box Elder incident, August 14, 2018.

There had been an officer involved shooting and hostage-taking. Not knowing exactly where the armed suspect was hiding, the child jumped into Deputy Tallon’s outstretched arms while Deputy Rusty Schmidt provided cover. The suspect was actually in the basement of the same home. Both deputies were nominated for their bravery in an act that involved significant risk of life.

Patrol Captain Tony Harrison says, “The heroism these men showed is consistent with the values of the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and how we’ll always put the community above our own safety.”

“It happened so fast. I knew we had to get that girl out of there,” says Deputy Tallon thinking back. “It’s not real hero stuff. Anybody in the office would have done the same thing. All of us run toward danger to help others.” Both deputies enjoyed the opportunity to later meet the brave child and her parents.
