Weekly Crop report: Rain, Cool Temps Provide S.D. Some Relief

UNDATED - For the week ending Sunday, much of the State received over an inch of rain, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. The precipitation, along with cooler than normal temperatures, provided drought relief to portions of South Dakota. There were 4.4 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 23 percent very short, 29 short, 47 adequate, and 1 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 29 percent very short, 33 short, 37 adequate, and 1 surplus.

Spring wheat harvested was 88 percent, equal to last year, but ahead of 74 for the five-year average.

Oats harvested was 89 percent, behind 96 last year, and near 91 average.

Barley condition rated 59 percent very poor, 21 poor, 20 fair, 0 good, and 0 excellent. Barley mature was 92 percent, near 91 last year, and near 90 average. Harvested was 45 percent, well behind 83 last year and 67 average.

Corn condition rated 9 percent very poor, 18 poor, 31 fair, 40 good, and 2 excellent. Corn dough was 65 percent, behind 81 last year and 75 average. Dented was 13 percent, behind 21 both last year and average.

Soybean condition rated 7 percent very poor, 15 poor, 36 fair, 38 good, and 4 excellent. Soybeans setting pods was 89 percent, near 93 last year and 88 average. Dropping leaves was 2 percent, near 6 last year and 4 average.

Sorghum condition rated 18 percent very poor, 14 poor, 59 fair, 9 good, and 0 excellent. Sorghum headed was 85 percent, behind 95 last year and 93 average. Coloring was 22 percent, behind 41 last year and 30 average. Mature was 3 percent, equal to last year, and near 1 average.

Sunflower condition rated 8 percent very poor, 22 poor, 55 fair, 15 good, and 0 excellent. Sunflowers blooming was 80 percent, near 76 last year and 83 average. Ray flowers dried was 6 percent.

Alfalfa condition rated 41 percent very poor, 33 poor, 14 fair, 11 good, and 1 excellent. Alfalfa second cutting was 71 percent complete, near 75 last year, and behind 89 average. Third cutting was 35 percent, behind 46 last year, and near 39 average.

Pasture and range condition rated 34 percent very poor, 24 poor, 28 fair, 14 good, and 0 excellent.

Stock water supplies rated 25 percent very short, 25 short, 49 adequate, and 1 surplus.
