Sturgis vs Yankton

Sturgis vs Yankton
Yankton cruises past Sturgis
Gary Matthews and Sports Staff - October 9, 2017

YANKTON, S.D. - After getting delayed by lightning Friday night, Yankton came out ready to play and ran past Sturgis Saturday afternoon.

Yankton scored on its first four offensive possessions — and scored off an interception for good measure — on the way to a 47-7 victory over the Scoopers.

With Caid Koletzky running a wildcat-style offense, the Bucks moved down the field in chunks, with Carter Peterson taking it the final nine yards for an 8-0 lead late in the first quarter.

The Scoopers converted on fourth-and-inches to keep their second drive alive, but a bad snap stalled the drive. After a high pass to start the possession, Yankton used five big runs — the last for 15 yards by Peterson — to extend the lead to 16-0.

By the time the Sturgis offense had another first down, the Bucks had scored on two more offensive possessions  — scoring on a 15-yard run by Ray Wermers and a 30-yard pass to Tate O’Hara — and saw Cameron Krejci return an interception for a touchdown and a 37-0 lead.

It just the second win of the season for Yankton -- but a big one, because it came into the game as the lone team out of the 11AA playoff race.

Sturgis falls to 2-5 on the season and will play Pine Ridge for homecoming on Friday, October 13.
