Sheridan County declares disaster after tornado

Story By: The Associated Press. Copyright 2010

HELENA, Mont. - Sheridan County officials have declared a disaster emergency in the wake of one of the most powerful and deadly tornadoes to touch down in Montana.
National Weather Service officials say Monday night's tornado in the northeastern corner of the state packed 150 mile-per-hour winds and was two to three miles wide. It killed two people and injured a 71-year-old woman while destroying their farm and wiping out all the buildings on it.
Sheridan County Commissioner Bill Nyby says besides the farmhouse, the biggest damage was to a bridge a mile and a half away. He says there has been no dollar estimate of the damage as yet.
Nyby says the disaster declaration will allow the county to receive assistance from the state and levy a two-mill emergency tax if the damage warrants it.
