Black Hills Stock Show taking livestock entries
F. Ganje - November 10, 2016

RAPID CITY, SD – The build-up to the 2017 Black Hills Stock Show is underway with the first deadlines coming up. Early consignments to livestock shows and sales are strong, says Kadee Hande, stock show marketing manager. “We offer 10 different breeds and all of our livestock go right to work after the Black Hills Stock Show," she notes. “They are all purebred animals that can be incorporated immediately into an operation." She adds, “We also have a lot of producers who come to the stock show because it’s an efficient way for them to market their breeding program." Entry deadlines are just around the corner. Horse sale entries close today (November 10, 2015) at 5:00pm, while the cattle consignments deadline is Tuesday, November 15, 2016. Handee says from early indicators, the final selection process in sale horse entries will be just as challenging as in years past with quality running deep. “We get such a huge turn out for our horse sale," says Hande. “ We insure buyer quality and confidence through a screening process. The sale committee makes sure we have a price point for every type of horse that will be consigned. We have different disciplines of horses; barrel horses, team roping horses, some really great ranch horses." Long known for a cattle lineup that is tailored to the commercial producer, Hande knows this year presents more challenges in terms of market volatility the industry has experienced over the past 12 months. But she points out the strengths this particular stock show brings into play to offset some of those circumstances. “The market plays a huge role at stock show because we know our core audience is commercial cattle producers." She continues, “A benefit here is that they can browse a lot of different programs all under one roof. And all of the consignors are adamant that customers are satisfied at the end of the day and the end of the season as well." There is also an organized effort to bring young producers into the lineup at Stock Show with the Black Hills Gold Futurity. “We have some good incentives for our female offerings as well. If a youth purchases a female, the heifer qualifies for the Futurity held in August during the Central States Fair," explains Hande. “ We want to encourage youth to get involved in livestock production." There are different requirements for entering livestock. Handee encourages producers to call the stock show office and to go online at blackhillsstockshow.com for more information. “Everybody wants to double check things before they enter which sometimes means going right to the wire," she shares. “ We get a big rush the day of deadline," she notes, adding, “ We’re looking at really strong entries and sales this year.
