|Class AA Basketball could see "Sweet 16" format soon
SDHSAA-Sweet 16 for Class AA
Sports Staff - April 19, 2017
UNDATED – The South Dakota High School Activities Association Board of Directors has approved first reading of a change to the post-season for Class AA basketball.
The board is contemplating a plan that would abandon the current district and regional format in favor of a ‘Sweet 16’ type format now currently in use in Class A.
The Sweet 16 would seed the top 16 teams in Class AA, and have them play each other with the 8 winners going to state.
Some West River coaches and athletic directors don’t like the plan, however.
Spearfish Athletic Director Jordan Bauer fears the change would eliminate the great regional representation and rivalries currently in play in Western South Dakota.
Sturgis Athletic Director Mike Paris agrees.
The board, dominated by East River representation, voted 6-3 in favor of the ‘Sweet 16’ plan. It will be up or discussion and a possible final vote in June.
