Snow and Ice Affect Parts of South Dakota

UNDATED - For the week ending Sunday, wet and unseasonably cold weather impacted much of the State, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Snow and ice affected parts of western and northeastern South Dakota early in the week. Rain and snow were prevalent across southeastern and east central locations at the end of the reporting period. There were 4.4 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 0 percent very short, 12 short, 83 adequate, and 5 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 3 percent very short, 17 short, 78 adequate, and 2 surplus.

Winter wheat condition rated 1 percent very poor, 11 poor, 34 fair, 53 good, and 1 excellent. Winter wheat jointed was 18 percent, behind 32 last year.

Spring wheat planted was 84 percent, near 80 last year, and ahead of 68 for the five-year average. Emerged was 49 percent, near 48 last year, and ahead of 35 average.

Oats planted was 84 percent, ahead of 79 last year and 72 average. Emerged was 50 percent, equal to last year, and ahead of 39 average.

Barley planted was 66 percent, ahead of 47 last year and 52 average. Emerged was 18 percent, near 22 both last year and average.

Corn planted was 7 percent, near 11 last year, and behind 20 average.

Soybeans planted was 2 percent, near 1 last year, and equal to average.

Cattle and calf conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 1 poor, 15 fair, 77 good, and 7 excellent. Calving progress was 83 percent. Cattle and calf death loss rated 1 percent heavy, 73 average, and 26 light.

Sheep and lamb conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 4 poor, 23 fair, 69 good, and 4 excellent. Lambing progress was 91 percent. Sheep and lamb death loss rated 0 percent heavy, 73 average, and 27 light. Sheep shorn was 76 percent.

Hay and roughage supplies rated 5 percent very short, 17 short, 75 adequate, and 3 surplus.

Stock water supplies rated 0 percent very short, 11 short, 87 adequate, and 2 surplus.
