Better Business Bureau offers advice to avoid office supply fraud

RAPID CITY, S.D. - The Better Business Bureau in South Dakota reports the most frequent business scams involve invoices and charities.

Another major problem is office supply fraud. This is when a random invoice comes in the mail, showing an order of office supplies that you haven't received or didn't order.

Jessie Schmidt with the Better Business Bureau told KOTA-TV ,"We tell businesses all the time to make sure they are required to use a purchase order, which will help if you can't track that purchase order to an actual invoice; or to something that you did order. Then you shouldn't be responsible for those charges."

Phishing scams are also another problem. For example, the scammer will send an email to the company saying click on a link to your order. By clicking the link it will then download infections to your computer.

Schmidt says ways to avoid a scam are to never rely on electronic communication, and to pick up the phone.

If you are a victim, alert your local police department and homeland security, or the us attorney's office.
