New Shelter update
Sturgis city leaders say new park shelter was needed
Gary Matthews - May 16, 2017

STURGIS, S.D. – Despite some public outcry, Sturgis city leaders say a new city park shelter was needed.

At Monday night’s council meeting, the city council explained the dangerous condition the old Stone Shelter was in.

City Manager Daniel Ainslie says the shelter was in very poor condition, and the repair costs far exceeded the cost to build a new one.

"The shelter has been in very poor condition for many years and it came down to the building's structural integrity. It was really not safe. The parks board and the council looked at the cost of fixing it and building a new one, and building a new one was the most efficient way to go."

Crews began tearing down the historic structure on May 2, and what followed was a social media outburst from some upset by the move. Those upset complained they weren’t told of the decision.

However, the city has been talking about the deteriorating condition of the shelter for years, and the decision to build new has been known for some time. In fact, Ainslie says information about the shelter also had been included in direct mailings to every city utility account holder and at least 13 park board meetings over the past 13 years.

In March, bids were let to replace the structure with a new ADA compliant shelter.  Sidewalks will also be added to allow access to the shelter.

The new shelter will be open for use by July 1.
