Cow on the loose in Sturgis Wednesday
Escaped cow causes minor damage, eluding capture for an hour
Gary Matthews - May 18, 2017

STURGIS, S.D. - Sturgis law enforcement had an unusual case keeping them busy Wednesday afternoon.

A cow managed to escape from the Sturgis Meat Company, and kept law enforcement and game, fish and parks and Sturgis Public Works busy for over an hour.

The cow eventually made its way from the north side of Sturgis to the south side of Sturgis, where at one point, it began to cause concern because the middle school was close to letting out for the day.

Sturgis Police Chief Geody VanDewater says the cow was herded over to a non-populated area on West Farley where it could be put down safely by a friend of the owner.

VanDewater says during the hour-long escapade, the cow caused only minor damage to a garden and a fence.
