Regional Baseball Tournament
Rapid City Stevens ends Sturgis' baseball season
Gary Matthews - May 21, 2017

PIERRE, S.D. - Rapid City Stevens jumped out to a 7-0 nothing lead after two innings, and never looked back, as they beat Sturgis 8-0 Saturday in regional baseball.

Sturgis was expecting a tough game. They started their top pitcher, Caleb Bates, in hopes of shutting down the Raiders.

But Stevens brought out the big bats, and by the time the 3rd inning rolled around, Bates was replaced on the mound by Tristen Walters.

Walters helped shut down the Raiders' scoring -- but good, solid pitching by Jesse Nicholson and a great defense, never let Sturgis back into the game.

Nicholson pitched all seven innings, and struck out 3 with just 3 walks.

Stevens finished with 11 hits on the day.

Earlier Saturday, Pierre shut-out Rapid City Central 11-0 in five innings. Pierre went on to win the regional championship game over Rapid City Stevens and advance to the state tournament next weekend. Pierre also pitched a shut-out in the Stevens game, winning 9-0.
