Ethel Rose Johnson, age 90 of Lemmon, passed from this life on Monday, May 22, 2017, at Sanford Health in Bismarck, ND.

The Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday May 27, 2017 at 10:30 am at Calvary Lutheran Church in Lemmon. Pastor Charlotte Kvale will officiate. Burial and Order of Eastern Star Rites will follow at Greenhill Cemetery at Lemmon.

Visitation will be on Friday, May 26, 2017 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. followed by a family service at 7:00 p.m. all at the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon.

Special music will be provided by Gillian Damjanovich and Mary Jean Jensen. Serving as casket bearers are her grandchildren. Honorary casket bearers are her great grandchildren and her great-great granddaughter.

ETHEL ROSE VERDOUW was born on July 9, 1926, in McIntosh, SD to Benjamin Frederick and Bertha Emma (Fedde) VerDouw. She attended school in McIntosh graduating with the Class of 1944. Ethel worked in the local grocery store. In 1945, she went to New Jersey during the War because her brother was stationed in New York. She returned to McIntosh and was the Corson County Deputy Register of Deeds from 1945 to 1947. After moving to Lemmon, Ethel worked at the Clinic for Drs. Steiner and Totten. She was united in marriage to Evert O. Johnson on January 20, 1949, in Aberdeen, SD. They lived in Lemmon where they made their home and raised their family.

She was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star, Rebekahs, VFW Auxiliary, Legion Auxiliary, and Women’s Club. She was also a Girl Scout Leader and an Associate Guardian of Job’s Daughters. Ethel was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church and spent many hours involved with Sunday school, Altar Guild, and Circle. Her hobbies included bowling, playing cards, and she was an accomplished seamstress.

Ethel touched many lives through her caring personality and big hugs. She was extremely proud of her family and loved every moment she spent with them.

Surviving family members include her 1 son and daughter-in-law, Michael (Kathy) Johnson, Rapid City, SD; her 3 daughters and sons-in-law, Ellen (James) Owen, Bismarck, ND; Sharon (Robert) Catchpole, Wheatland, WY; Gail (Daniel) Froelich, Lemmon, SD; and 11 grandchildren, Jennifer (Marty) Weber, Stephanie (Ryan) Archibald, Brenda (Ron) Malard, Chuck Catchpole, Brooke (Ben) Steward, Stacy (Derek) Froelich-Myhre, Marcus (Jennifer) Catchpole, Benjamin Johnson, Sarah (Nate) Reitzel, Zachary (Hilary) Taylor and Michael (Lori) Taylor. Ethel also has 14 great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Evert on October 27, 1995, 3 brothers, Lawrence, Harry, and Paul and a great grandson, Max Archibald.
