Sports Staff - May 30, 2017

RAPID CITY, S.D.  - Former Post 22 coach Dave Ploof died  Monday after battling cancer. He was 80 years old.

Ploof started the Hardhats program and coached them for 47 years before retiring in 2011. He won 34 state titles and earned eight trips to the American Legion World series. Ploof won one National Championship as he established himself as one of the most influential American Legion Baseball people in the Nation.

On May 15, Rapid City Mayor Steve Allender proclaimed "Dave Ploof Day," to recognize the former Hardhats leader.

Current Post 22 Bullets coach and President of the Post 22 Foundation, Kelvin Torve, is a former major league baseball player, and says Ploof was the best coach he ever had.

Funeral arrangements are still being made by family members at this time.
