South Dakota Farmers Plant Record Soybean Acres

UNDATED - South Dakota producers planted 5.20 million acres of corn for all purposes, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. This is down 7 percent from last year. Of the total acres, 98 percent were planted with biotechnology varieties. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 4.80 million acres, down 6 percent from a year ago.

Soybean planted acreage is estimated at 5.40 million acres, up 4 percent from last year, and a record high. Of these, 96 percent were planted with genetically modified, herbicide resistant seed. Producers expect to harvest 5.36 million acres, up 4 percent from a year ago, and also a record high.

Winter wheat planted last fall is estimated at 950 thousand acres, down 19 percent from a year ago. Harvested area is expected to total 650 thousand acres, down 41 percent from last year. Durum wheat planted area is estimated at 7,000 acres, down 3,000 from a year earlier. Harvested acreage is expected to total 6,000 acres, down 1,000 acres. Other spring wheat planted area is estimated at 1.10 million acres, up 2 percent from a year ago. Harvested area is estimated at 940 thousand acres, down 10 percent from last year.

Oil sunflower planted area is estimated at 490 thousand acres, down 4 percent from last year. Harvested area is estimated at 475 thousand acres, down 4 percent from a year ago. Non-oil sunflower planted area is estimated at 60.0 thousand acres, up 25 percent from the previous year. Harvested area is estimated at 57.0 thousand acres, up 27 percent from the previous year.

Sorghum planted for all purposes is estimated at 300 thousand acres, up 11 percent from the previous year. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 240 thousand acres, up 20 percent from last year.

Oats planted for all purposes is estimated at 235 thousand acres, down 20 percent from the previous year. Area to be harvested for grain is estimated at 100 thousand acres, down 9 percent from last year.

Safflower planted, at 21.0 thousand acres is down 4 percent from last year. Harvested area is estimated at 19.0 thousand acres, up 3 percent from the previous year.

Proso millet planted, at 70.0 thousand acres is up 46 percent from last year.

Dry edible peas planted area is estimated at 40.0 thousand acres, up 25 percent from last year. Harvested area is estimated at 38.0 thousand acres, up 27 percent from the previous year.

Flaxseed planted acreage, at 3,000 acres, is down 7,000 acres from a year ago. Area to be harvested is estimated at 3,000 acres, down 6,000 acres from last year.

Alfalfa acreage to be harvested for dry hay is estimated at 1.65 million acres, down 3 percent from last year. Other hay acreage to be cut for hay is estimated at 1.60 million acres, up 14 percent from a year ago.

The estimates of planted and harvested acreages in this news release are based primarily on surveys conducted during the first two weeks of June.
